Three Days in Pouzac, France: A Quiet Pyrenean Escape at the Golf Country Club de Bigorre

After several weeks travelling through northern Spain and along the French Basque Coast, arriving in Pouzac felt like a complete change of pace. Instead of another busy seaside town, I found myself surrounded by rolling countryside, golf fairways and the Pyrenees rising dramatically in the distance. It was exactly the kind of place where I could slow down for a few days and enjoy a completely different side of southwestern France.
I stayed at the Domaine Golf Country Club de Bigorre, a four-star property in Pouzac overlooking the valley of Bagnères-de-Bigorre. The hotel sits within the golf estate, surrounded by nature and facing the Pyrenees, so the setting is arguably its biggest attraction. The property offers one- and two-bedroom suites, each designed with a more residential feel than a traditional hotel room, and the private outdoor spaces make it particularly easy to sit back and enjoy the mountain scenery.

What I liked most about staying here was how different it felt from the hotels earlier in my trip. Rather than being in the middle of a city or directly beside the beach, the hotel is surrounded by greenery, with the golf course stretching out in front of the property and the Pyrenees providing a spectacular backdrop. The official property describes the suites as offering private terraces with views towards the highest peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées, and that sense of space and connection with the landscape is really what makes the stay memorable.
My suite gave me plenty of room to relax after days of travelling, with a separate living area and bedroom rather than the more compact layout you often find in a standard hotel room. I particularly enjoyed having an outdoor space where I could sit with a coffee in the morning and look across the valley towards the mountains. There was something wonderfully peaceful about waking up without traffic outside the window and having the Pyrenees as the view instead.

The golf course itself is another major part of the experience. The 18-hole course was designed by Olivier Brizon in 1991 and covers 59 hectares, with the entire course positioned to take advantage of the surrounding mountain scenery. Even if you're not planning to play a round, it's hard not to appreciate the setting.
For me, the Domaine Golf Country Club de Bigorre worked particularly well as a place to pause during a longer road trip. It wasn't somewhere I felt the need to constantly leave and find something to do. I could enjoy the surroundings, take in the views and spend some time relaxing before continuing my journey through France.
A Little About Pouzac

Pouzac is a small commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées, situated just outside Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Unlike the larger towns and famous mountain destinations nearby, Pouzac is very much about its peaceful rural setting, making it an interesting stop if you're looking for somewhere quieter from which to explore this part of France.
The area has long been connected with the wider Bigorre region, a historic territory known for its mountain landscapes, thermal towns, agriculture and close relationship with the Pyrenees. Nearby Bagnères-de-Bigorre developed an important reputation as a spa destination, while the surrounding villages retained a much more traditional rural character.
Today, Pouzac is best known for its natural surroundings and the Domaine Golf Country Club de Bigorre. From the property, you have views across the Bagnères-de-Bigorre valley towards the mountains, and the landscape gives you a good idea of why this part of France has attracted visitors looking for fresh air, outdoor activities and a slower pace of life for generations.
What I enjoyed about Pouzac was precisely that it doesn't feel like a destination where you need a long checklist of attractions. The appeal is the countryside, the mountains and the opportunity to experience a quieter side of the Hautes-Pyrénées.
One Thing to See and Do: Explore Bagnères-de-Bigorre

Bagnères-de-Bigorre | Around 10 minutes by car from Domaine Golf Country Club de Bigorre
If you're staying in Pouzac, I'd recommend making the short trip to Bagnères-de-Bigorre. The historic spa town is the natural place to go when you want to explore beyond the golf course and get a better feel for the area.
Bagnères-de-Bigorre has been associated with thermal waters since Roman times, and its spa heritage helped establish the town as an important destination for visitors seeking relaxation and wellness. Today, you can still see that history in the architecture around the centre, with elegant buildings, traditional streets and the thermal facilities giving the town a distinctly different character from the small villages surrounding it.
I enjoyed simply walking around the centre rather than trying to see everything in one visit. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, with cafés, restaurants and local shops spread around its historic streets, while the surrounding mountains provide a constant reminder of where you are.

For me, the real attraction was experiencing the contrast between Pouzac's countryside and Bagnères-de-Bigorre's more traditional town atmosphere. It made for an easy afternoon outing and gave me the chance to explore somewhere with a little more history and local life before returning to the peace and quiet of the golf estate.
If you have more time in the region, Bagnères-de-Bigorre also makes a useful starting point for exploring the wider Pyrenees, with hiking, mountain activities, thermal experiences and other scenic destinations all within reach. The hotel itself highlights the region's national parks, UNESCO sites, hiking routes, ski resorts and thermal activities as some of the main attractions nearby.
Allow: 2–3 hours.
Best for: History, thermal heritage, local shops and getting a taste of life in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

For dinner, I wanted somewhere genuinely local rather than another restaurant aimed primarily at visitors, and L'Assiette de Juliette was exactly the kind of recommendation I was looking for. Located in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, the restaurant focuses on French and regional cooking and has developed an excellent reputation, with a current rating of 4.7 from more than 1,200 reviews.
The atmosphere is relaxed but polished, making it a good choice whether you're looking for a proper dinner after a day exploring the mountains or simply want somewhere memorable to eat during your stay in Pouzac. The menu focuses on quality ingredients and well-executed French cooking rather than trying to overwhelm you with complicated presentation.
I chose dishes that allowed me to experience the flavours of the region, starting with a seasonal starter before moving on to a beautifully prepared main course featuring local produce. The cooking was confident without being overly fussy, and the meal felt very much like the kind of dinner I had hoped to find in this part of France.
What made it particularly enjoyable was that it felt connected to the local community. There was a mixture of diners enjoying relaxed evenings out rather than a restaurant filled entirely with tourists, which is always something I appreciate when travelling.
For an authentic dinner close to Pouzac, this would be my recommendation.

Why I Enjoyed My Few Days in Pouzac
Pouzac wasn't originally the kind of destination I would have expected to become a highlight of my trip, but that's probably why I enjoyed it so much. After spending weeks moving between coastal cities and busy tourist destinations, having three days surrounded by countryside and mountains gave me a chance to slow down and enjoy a completely different side of France.
The Domaine Golf Country Club de Bigorre was a big part of that. The combination of the spacious suite, private outdoor space, golf course and views across the Pyrenees made it a relaxing place to stay, particularly after a long road trip.
Pouzac itself is small, but I think that's part of its appeal. You don't come here to spend three days ticking off major attractions. You come for the landscape, the quiet roads, the nearby mountains, the traditional towns and the chance to experience a slower pace of life in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
For me, it was a welcome change of scenery and a very relaxing way to continue my journey through France. If you're travelling through the Pyrenees and want somewhere peaceful with spectacular mountain views, Pouzac is certainly worth considering.
