The Best Places to Visit, Eat and Relax in Suances, Cantabria

Stayed in Suances, Cantabria, Spain | July 15–17

When people think about visiting Cantabria, Santander usually gets most of the attention.

After spending a few days in Suances, I think that's a mistake.

Located just over 30 minutes west of Santander, this charming seaside town offers beautiful beaches, dramatic coastal cliffs, excellent seafood and a much more relaxed atmosphere than many of Spain's larger coastal destinations. It feels like the kind of place where life naturally slows down, making it perfect for anyone wanting to escape busy cities without sacrificing great food or beautiful scenery.

Whether you're stopping for a weekend or including Suances as part of a northern Spain road trip, these are the places I'd recommend experiencing.

A Little History of Suances

Although today Suances is best known as a popular seaside destination, its history stretches back much further than its beautiful beaches.

The area has been inhabited since Roman times, when it was believed to have served as a small coastal settlement connected to trade along the Cantabrian coast. Over the centuries, fishing became the heart of the local economy, shaping the town into the close-knit community it remains today.

While tourism has grown significantly over recent decades, Suances has managed to retain much of its traditional charm. Fishing boats still leave the harbour each morning, seafood remains central to local cuisine, and many visitors quickly discover that the town offers far more than simply a place to spend a day at the beach.

Today, Suances strikes a lovely balance between a traditional fishing town and a relaxed holiday destination, making it one of Cantabria's hidden gems.

1. Walk Along Playa de la Concha and the Coastal Promenade

Playa de la Concha | Around 5 minutes by car from Hotel Costa Esmeralda Suites

One of the first places I visited was Playa de la Concha, and it quickly became one of my favourite spots in Suances.

Sheltered within a beautiful bay, the beach offers golden sand, calm water and fantastic views across the Cantabrian coastline. Unlike some of Spain's larger beach destinations, it felt relaxed and welcoming, with plenty of space to enjoy the scenery.

I found myself returning more than once, not necessarily to spend hours on the beach, but simply to enjoy the walk along the promenade. The sea breeze, the sound of the waves and the cafés overlooking the water created exactly the sort of atmosphere I enjoy while travelling.

If you continue along the coastline, you'll discover several viewpoints where you can look back across the bay and appreciate just how beautiful this part of Cantabria really is.

Whether you're visiting during summer or outside the peak season, it's a lovely place to spend a couple of hours.

Allow: 1–2 hours.

Best for: Coastal walks, beach lovers and sunset views.

2. Visit Punta del Dichoso

If there's one viewpoint you shouldn't miss in Suances, it's Punta del Dichoso.

Standing high above the Atlantic, this dramatic headland offers some of the best panoramic views anywhere in the town. Looking one way, you'll see Playa de los Locos stretching below the cliffs, while the opposite direction reveals the beaches, harbour and coastline that make Suances so special.

I arrived late in the afternoon, and it turned out to be the perfect time to visit. The light softened across the cliffs, surfers could be seen below waiting for waves, and the ocean seemed to stretch endlessly towards the horizon.

It's one of those places where there's very little to actually "do."

Instead, you simply stand there and appreciate the scenery.

Sometimes that's more than enough.

If you're travelling with a camera, don't forget it. This was easily one of my favourite photography spots during my stay.

Allow: Around 45 minutes.

Best for: Photography, sunsets and spectacular coastal scenery.

Best Breakfast: Confitería Romanos

Suances | Around 4 minutes by car from Hotel Costa Esmeralda Suites

Every destination seems to have that one bakery where locals start their morning, and in Suances, Confitería Romanos quickly became my favourite.

Walking inside each morning, the smell of freshly baked pastries filled the café, making it almost impossible to choose just one. Alongside excellent coffee, the display cabinets were packed with croissants, cakes, traditional Spanish pastries and freshly baked bread.

I ordered a toasted ham and tomato baguette with a coffee on one visit before returning another morning for a pastry and another excellent cappuccino.

It's relaxed, affordable and exactly the sort of local café I enjoy discovering while travelling.

Best for: Fresh pastries, coffee and a relaxed local atmosphere.

Best Lunch: La Dársena del Pescador

Suances Harbour | Around 5 minutes by car from Hotel Costa Esmeralda Suites

Being a traditional fishing town, seafood naturally takes centre stage in Suances.

La Dársena del Pescador is one of the best places to experience it.

Located beside the harbour, the restaurant specialises in fresh fish and shellfish sourced from the Cantabrian Sea. The atmosphere feels relaxed and welcoming, with many diners lingering over long lunches while watching fishing boats come and go.

I ordered grilled hake with roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables, followed by a homemade dessert and an orange juice.

The fish was wonderfully fresh, perfectly cooked and exactly the sort of simple, high-quality meal that northern Spain does so well.

If you enjoy seafood, this is a restaurant I'd happily recommend.

Best Dinner: El Nuevo Molino

Puente Arce | Around 15 minutes by car from Hotel Costa Esmeralda Suites

For dinner, I wanted something a little more special.

Just a short drive from Suances, El Nuevo Molino delivers exactly that.

Awarded a Michelin star, the restaurant showcases modern Cantabrian cuisine while remaining deeply connected to local ingredients and traditions. Every dish feels refined without becoming overly complicated, allowing exceptional produce to remain the focus.

The service throughout the evening was warm, knowledgeable and attentive, creating a dining experience that felt memorable from beginning to end.

It's the sort of restaurant that's perfect for celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself to one outstanding meal during your trip.

Reservations are highly recommended.

Best for: Michelin-starred dining and modern Cantabrian cuisine.

Why Suances Is Worth More Than Just a Day Trip

One of the things I enjoyed most about Suances was how relaxed everything felt.

There wasn't any pressure to rush between attractions or pack every hour with sightseeing. Instead, my days naturally revolved around walking beside the sea, discovering fantastic local restaurants, enjoying excellent coffee and taking time to appreciate the beautiful Cantabrian coastline.

Although many travellers visit for just a few hours, I think Suances deserves longer.

Its beaches, dramatic viewpoints and laid-back atmosphere make it the perfect destination to slow down, particularly if you're exploring northern Spain by car.

If you're planning your own Cantabria road trip, I'd definitely recommend adding Suances to your itinerary.

It may not be the largest town you'll visit, but it was certainly one of the most enjoyable stops on mine.
