Solo Escape to Paradise: My Stay at The Westin Reserva Conchal, Costa Rica

Ever dreamt of checking into a lush tropical resort where the only decisions you need to make are “pool or beach?” and “should I have pasta or sushi for dinner?” That was me a few weeks ago. Solo, sun-seeking, and needing a serious recharge. Costa Rica called, and I answered with a stay at The Westin Reserva Conchal, Golf Resort & Spa. Let me take you along.

So, here’s the vibe. I pull up to the property and I’m immediately met with warm air, a huge open-air lobby, and staff that treat you like they’ve known you for years. You know that rare mix of laid-back but top-notch service? That’s exactly what they’ve nailed here. This place isn’t your average resort. It’s nestled between the Pacific Ocean and forest-covered hills of Guanacaste, spread across 2,400 acres of pure “wow.” You’re basically in a luxury jungle. You’ll see palm trees, pink bougainvilleas, and oh, casual iguanas, coatis, and even storks just chilling on the property. Can you imagine sipping your morning coffee while a toucan flaps by overhead?

I stayed in the Royal Beach Club area, which is adults only and totally worth the splurge. It’s tucked away from the family zones, super quiet, and comes with its own perks like private check-in, its own pool, and exclusive buffet. The room? Pure comfort. Big cozy bed, coffee machine (bless), snacks, and even some travel guides to flip through. But honestly? The bathroom won my heart. Rainfall shower, separate tub (a rare find in Costa Rica), and spa-like vibes. I probably spent too much time there pretending I was in a wellness commercial.

If you’re anything like me, you judge a resort by its pool and wow. The Royal Beach Club pool feels like a secret lagoon, with cabanas and a swim-up bar that serves cold drinks and good vibes. What stood out most was how natural it all looked. Trees, flowers, no plastic-y pool deck energy. And yep, I did order a cocktail without leaving the pool. Solo traveler win.

Let’s talk food. I live to eat on vacation, and Westin did not disappoint. Seven international restaurants to choose from, and a buffet that somehow always had something new. Dinner at Faisanella, their Italian restaurant, was unforgettable. Think pasta that melts in your mouth and tiramisu so good I actually paused mid-bite and whispered, “damn.” Also checked out Bamboo, their Asian fusion spot. If you like flavor, spice, and something a little different, it’s a yes.

Now, I’ve stayed at my fair share of resorts, but the people here? Next-level kindness. From the moment I checked in with Estefany (seriously the sweetest person), I felt taken care of. Shoutout to Jonny and Josalinne who made sure I had everything I needed, and Bryan and Diego at the pool bar who kept the drinks and laughs flowing. Everyone smiled, remembered your name, and genuinely seemed happy to help. Something that’s surprisingly rare.

A Tee Time Worth Talking About: Golfing at Reserva Conchal

Okay, let’s talk about the golf. You know how sometimes you pack your clubs (or rent them) with hopes sky-high, and then the course turns out to be...meh? This is not one of those times.I didn’t expect to be blown away by the golf course at the Westin. I thought it would be nice, sure, but wow. The Reserva Conchal Golf Course seriously delivered.

First off, the course is a masterpiece designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and it somehow feels both tropical and wild but also perfectly kept. You’ve got lush rainforest on one side, the ocean peeking through the trees on the other, and the occasional stork or iguana casually wandering across the fairway like it owns the place. Which, let’s be honest, it kind of does. The fairways are in pristine condition, the greens are sneaky fast, and the layout keeps you guessing in the best way. Elevation changes, doglegs, bunkers in all the right (or wrong) spots. It’s a full mental and physical experience. My personal nemesis? Hole 10. It looks innocent until you chunk your approach into a hazard and start questioning your life decisions. Hole 17 though? Iconic. It’s a 210-yard par 3 from the back tees with a view that made me stop and just stare for a second. You’re perched high up, overlooking Conchal Beach and the mountains beyond, and it’s one of those moments that remind you why you play this crazy game.

Even if you’re not the next Tiger, the course isn’t designed to punish you. High handicap? No problem. It’s challenging but fair, and you’ll enjoy it even if you’re just here for the vibes.

Clubs, Carts, and Cool Features

Didn’t bring my clubs this time, so I rented a set, and yeah, they were solid. TaylorMade Stealths. Not brand new, but still fun to swing. The carts are actually pretty awesome too. GPS included, Bluetooth on board, cold water stocked. Everything you need, nothing you don’t. Bonus points for the practice facilities. You get complimentary range balls, there’s space to hit every club in the bag, and if you feel like sharpening your short game, there are practice greens for that too. You can even book a swing lesson. I didn’t, but part of me wishes I had after a few rogue drives. And oh, there’s one crocodile that hangs out by the ponds. Didn’t meet him personally, but apparently he keeps to himself. Still, maybe don’t go fishing for your Pro V1s.

The People Make the Game

Just like everywhere else at the Westin, the staff here is something special. From the friendly Pro Shop crew to the incredible Golf Centre team, everyone made me feel like a regular, even though I was clearly a tourist just trying to survive the back nine. Shoutout to Carlos Rojas, the Head Pro, who’s built an environment that feels exclusive yet super welcoming. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking to get out on the green for a few holes, they make sure you feel like part of the club.

Final Word: Should You Play?

Honestly? If you’re even thinking about it, just book a tee time. This is one of the most beautiful, well-run courses I’ve played, and Conde Nast apparently agrees, naming it one of the top 4 golf resorts in the world. You don’t have to be a scratch golfer to fall in love with Reserva Conchal. Whether you’re here solo, tagging along with golf-obsessed friends, or just want a day surrounded by rainforest and rolling fairways, this course is a total win. So bring your clubs or rent a set. Just don’t forget your sunscreen and maybe a few extra balls. Would you play here solo, or is golf more of a buddy trip for you? Either way, you’ll love this place.
